Shavonda Gardener changed out some bathroom tile she installed but didn’t like, which gave me the idea to change our paint, which wasn’t bad but just wasn’t exactly what we wanted.
Check out this Pinterest board to see some inspiration pics of different paint colors I wanted to try.
If you want to hear us talk more about painting our whole apartment, including how we chose colors and different painting techniques we used, check out episode 2.
This online preview really doesn’t do it justice, but Behr’s Limousine Leather paint is the blackest black I’ve ever seen.
Here are the thirteen different blacks I swatched up on four different walls of the bedroom. This is the gallery wall.
Here’s what it looks like to swatch that many different colors.
I wanted to try Clare’s black paints, as well as Backdrop’s.
I also tried four different blacks from Farrow and Ball. In case you’re wondering about their various finishes, you can check them out here. It turns out they don’t have more; they just call them all different things.
I narrowed the thirteen colors down to three: Private Black (top left), Off Black (top right), and Railings (bottom). But I still couldn’t tell which I wanted to use.
My mom suggested I make bigger swatches, and it became clear that Off Black (center) was the right choice.
$125 is a little more than I want to spend on paint, so I put a swatch of Off Black on this index card and took it to Home Depot to be colored matched. The middle color is Off Black. The bottom is the Behr color match, and the top is the PPG color match.
The color match didn’t look exactly the same because it was in a different finish than the original swatch.
Here are the specific values of our color matched paint, which Donnie is calling Gravitas.
And here’s the final product with our lime tree under it’s new grow light.
Here’s the throw pillow basket.
And the headboard.
And the decoupaged side table.
